Administrative Consultant Qualities

If you are seriously considering becoming an Administrative Consultant, there has never been a better time than right now.

If you are seriously considering becoming an Administrative Consultant, there has never been a better time than right now. This relatively unknown innovative business approach is flourishing mainly due to the current economic climate where companies are learning to watch the pennies and outsource their admin tasks. It is becoming more and more common for companies to resort to third party collaborations in order to complete projects and other admin related tasks that basically rob them of precious time and resources better used elsewhere. You cannot compare the cost of a full-time employee to paying a professional Administrative Consultant for services as and when needed.

Make the most of the skills and qualities that you already have. Are you hard-working? Motivated? Organized? Do you have great communication skills? Do you have a way with words? These are all fantastic qualities for an AC to possess and they can be put to good use.

But before you get started, you need to think hard about the pros and cons of this business to make sure that this is really for you.

PROS:

  1. If you want to make a break for it and branch out on your own but you don’t have the cash to invest in an office space and other start up expenses then this is perfect. All you need to start off with is a desk, a newish computer, reliable Internet access, a phone, fax, scanner and printer.
  2. Seeing as you’re your own boss, you get to decide your schedule (but be sure to stick to it!).
  3. You can pick and choose clients.
  4. You can finally make managerial choices that you’re happy with. No more nodding along politely to company policies you don’t really share.
  5. Flexibility.
  6. You can either be a part-time V.A. or it can be your full-time job depending on your circumstances.
  7. You get to form part of an active community of professionals.
  8. Take control of your own life!

BUSINESS PLAN

Remember… Planning is Key

CONS:

  1. If you’re not self-motivated this is probably not the right way for you to go. As an AC, you need to be a get up and go person as you have to drum up your own business and this doesn’t happen right away. You must put a lot of work into it before you reap the rewards. You also have to fulfill your obligations towards your clients.
  2. The buck stops with you. As great as it is to be your own boss and make all the business decisions yourself, it also means that you have to own full responsibility for everything that happens…good or bad.
  3. You especially need to think about local tax laws and what you will be obligated to pay as a self-employed person. Do your homework!
  4. Without a full-time work contract you will no longer be entitled to paid sick and holiday leave. You must be sure to include these factors in your business plan and budget.

Don’t be afraid to check out other Administrative Consultants’ websites, not to pinch their ideas but to compare services, prices etc. Many write about their personal experience when they first ventured into the AC world as well as the mistakes they made so it’s a great way to pick up tips and get advice.

If after reading this you feel that you have Administrative Consultant qualities and becoming an AC is the right path for you, do your research and take the plunge. The results can be so rewarding and there’s no greater feeling than having achieved something so awesome.

About Sabrina L. Williams

Although I was born in the UK, I moved to the Canary Islands, Spain at a young age and I haven't looked back. The Canaries is a fantastic place to live, I mean you can do all types of outdoor activities practically all year round because of the great weather. Horses are my poison but the islands are also a superb spot for water sports so they do attract a lot of attention from people around the world. Anyway, enough about that. Back in 2011, I made one of the biggest, scariest yet best decisions I'd ever made and set-up my own business in the middle of a recession. I love what I do as no two days are the same, plus Spanish law keeps me on my toes as it is constantly changing (often without warning!) so there is always something new to learn. As I've branched out in the world of Administrative Consultancy, I decided to create a blog to discuss topics of interest to others in my industry and my clients, share tips and experiences, to see what new ideas people have for improving their businesses and the like so I hope you'll find the time to join me on this venture...
